Friday Night and today, the recap

Post work, headed into NYC via the PATH from Hoesboken with CED. We headed first off to Blind Tiger Ale House. This lovely gem of a bar reopened in a new location recently after being closed for a while. With approximately 28 beers on draft to choose from, the decisions were tough. We started strong and finished strong. First, the Rouge I2PA. Strong, chock full of hops and sweet. Two Thumbs Up! Then, we had Great Divide Samurai Ale. We didn’t like it, but it was a rice beer, so that was cool. Finally, Acme IPA. I liked it. It’s a pretty standard IPA. Kinda malty.

Left there and had food at Cosi. It took forever for a fast-ish food place. It was OK. I even asked the waiter for the check after sitting around for 20 minutes waiting which I NEVER do. He said “in a minute” We shouldn’t of even paid for the food, but we did and left without even getting the check. Probably paid way too much, but anyway.

Left there and headed to Nevada Smiths for a pint and waited for Forrest to call us. Met Forrest, Jessica and Ian outside Irving. Sold my extra ticket to a beautiful blonde girl for her friend. I should have sold it for more than I did. Hindsight’s 20/20 my friends.

Finally, got into Irving and saw Architecture in Helsinki play. They played mostly new songs, which I liked, then some of the older songs. When they started playing Do The Whirlwind, they totally mashed it up and did a remixed version. It was awesome! I love big bands that switch instruments and play differently on each song.

Left for the drunktank aka The PATH back to Hoesboken and got back to NJ safe and sound.

Today, I rode my bike and was unsuccessful at the Salvation Army. Of to Veggie Heaven soon, then Andy’s. Wish me luck!

Munchmobile

Hey New Jersey, I’m going to be part of the 10th annual Munchmobile! Thanks for Bob for pointing it out to me, this year I’m going to chow down on Vegetarian Delights from all over our amazing state!

If you’re not familiar with the Munchmobile, it’s part of the Star Ledger Newspaper. It’s a van with a hot dog on it that drives around NJ going to restaurants every week to sample a certain type of food. Last year, Bob ate crab cakes, for instance. Then Peter Genovese writes an article which gets published in the Ledger as well as nj.com/munchmobile.

It’s going to be Fantastic!

Feeling Hot Hot Hot: Tabasco Review Part 1

McIllhenny Company sent me some bottles of Tabasco, BBQ and Mustards to taste. So far, I’ve tried the Southern Louisiana BBQ Sauce, the Chipotle Tabasco, Garlic Pepper Tabasco and Habanero Tabasco.

First, the BBQ Sauce. It’s not hot, but it’s packed with flavor. There are chunks of tomato, peppers, onion, garlic, etc. You can not only taste it, but see the chunks. This BBQ sauce would be perfect for marinating. I used it on Alfalfa sprouts last week for lunch. It’s not as sweet as you’re traditional BBQ sauce, but it doesn’t matter. Try it, if you like chunky sauces.

Habanero Tabasco Sauce. Ouch, Fiiiiiiiirre! It’s hot, but not over powering when combined with other flavors. I actually added it to the BBQ for some kick it just works perfectly. Try this out with Mexican food. It’s a perfect compliment. The Scoville Heat Unit ranges around 7000-8000. So, it’s up there.

Next, i tried the Garlic Pepper. It was so good on pizza. Instead of red pepper flakes, drizzle this on your pasta or eggplant and feel your taste buds sweating.

Lastly, i had the Chipotle. This, so far, is my favorite. The flavor is amazing. I had it last week with homemade hummus and it complimented so elegantly. The smokiness of the chipotle and the heat from the Tabasco’s pepper pulp was out of the world. I can’t wait to eat more. This might become my new best friend.

More pictures located here or here. If you’d like to buy some, i’d suggest clicking right here. They also sell the hot sauces in gallons! And they have badass merch like this shirt.

In other word.. DONT EAT SQUIRREL

TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey has warned squirrel hunters near a toxic waste dump about consuming the critters because they could be contaminated with lead.

It is the first time the state has cautioned Ringwood residents _ many who are members of the Ramapough Mountain Indian tribe who hunt and fish in the area _ about their squirrel intake, said Tom Slater, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Senior Services.

Read more here. Sorry to upset you Adam, but thats how they roll in the foothills of Mahwah/Ringwood.

Steel’s Gourmet Sauces - Chipotle BBQ -and Sweet & Sour

Steel's Gourmet Sauces

I was fortunate enough to receive four bottles of Steel’s Gourmet Food’s sauces recently. I received a BBQ, Chipotle BBQ, Sweet and Sour and a Peanut Sauce.

The first one i tried was of course the Rocky Mountain Chipotle BBQ Sauce. Since Steel’s doesn’t use sugar, this is sweetened using Splenda. The heat and smokiness from the smoked jalapeños aka chipotle hits you right away. It’s not overbearing, not at all. It’s just noticeable. My assumption is because of the lack of geniune sugar. Splenda is a decent substitute, but the sweet natural sugar might combat the smokiness better. However, the sauce it good, especially for a fat free. I used it today to marinate black beans for a smokey flavor before cooking. They flavor remained even as a marinade.

I also tried the Rocky Mountain Sweet and Sour. I have not cooked with it yet, however, it’s good. It combines the sweetness from cider and the sour from pineapple. These two flavors balance each out well. The texture is chunky which is unique. I enjoyed seeing chunks of tomato, onions, etc. Can’t wait to use this sauce for real. It would go really well with Tofu.

Steel’s Gourmet Foods can be found on the web here. I also have pictures on flickr here, here and above too.

10+ hours

I couldn’t think of what to call this post, so, deal.

I was in the car from Saturday until Monday about 10+ hours aside from the regular driving i did around town. Shit, that’s many a hour. I’m tired from that, but at least Fred, Brian and I got to see The Jazz June reunite benefitting their roadie Adam at the North Star Bar in Philadelphia. Same night as the Eagles game. That was cool and just like i’d thought eagles fan’s would be like. They’ll be at The Court Tavern if you’re interested in Superbowl Sunday. I’ll be in sunny Florida! The show was amazing and i had Rogue Dead Guy, Allagash Ale and PBR 16oz Cans!!!

The second part of my weekend was Gore Mountain. Dimmy and i headed up for the 3 hour ride and it was fun. We listened to the Gary roast on Howard 100. Shit, those are some dumb and/or funny people they had on there. So, we arrived upstate around noon, started drinking and waited for the others to get back from the mountain. Here’s some pictures. Kept drinkin until late. Watched Idiocracy, some 24 episodes (season 6 rocks, so far!) and crashed. Woke up early to the bitter cold and sound of ice and freezing rain. Packed back up and drove back to Jersey. We were driving away from the snow and towards the fog, so that was interesting. Stopped at the rest stop with Roy Rogers. I love their BBQ sauce, it’s sweet and spicy at the same time. It’s like honey sugar and cayenne pepper or something.
